WHEN TO PUSH
A Parent’s Guide to Supporting Your Young Athlete Without Burning Them Out
A Word From The Author
Andy Ryan is a youth sports coach, parent, and writer passionate about helping families navigate the highs and lows of competitive sport. Drawing from years of firsthand experience on the sidelines and the training pitch, Andy has seen both the triumphs and the struggles that young athletes and their parents face.
As a coach and a parent of a young athlete himself, Andy has lived the balancing act, wanting the best for his child while knowing that pushing too hard, or not enough, can impact motivation, confidence, and joy in the game.
His writing combines research, coaching insights, and real-world stories to give parents practical tools they can use straight away. With When to Push, Andy launches The Push Mindset series, a collection of books designed to help parents support ambition and resilience while fostering a healthy love for sport.
Andy’s mission is simple: to empower parents to guide their children with confidence, empathy, and perspective so kids can thrive both on and off the field.

Are Saying
I laughed when l read “l loved watching you play”, this is my Mantra!!
My favourite would be the 5 min check in, l believe that’s a great tool and way to go about it. I also like the 10 golden rules for parents. Amazing read and amazing work!

Its a really fantastic guideline for parents who struggle to know how to support their child in sports. I particularly love the “prase Effort, not Outcomes”.

Upcoming Book
A parents guide to Encouraging Growth, Focus and Success in Youth Sport.
Every parent wants to see their child succeed, but knowing how to guide that journey can feel like walking a tightrope. Push too hard, and you risk burnout, resentment, or broken confidence. Push too little, and your child may never discover what they are truly capable of.
This book is about finding the balance. It’s not about pressure, perfection, or producing champions at all costs. It’s about teaching your child how to stretch, grow, and unlock their potential in ways that fit who they are — not who we want them to be.
In When to Push, we explored the signs that tell us whether to step forward or step back. Now, in How to Push, we move from observation to action. These pages will give you practical methods to encourage ambition, build resilience, and create an environment where your child feels supported rather than pressured.
